How it goes down

First we pressure wash the whole surface and let it dry out completely. Cracks get cut open and repaired, and any spalling or loose concrete gets patched. Then the coating is sprayed on, knocked down to an even texture, and sealed.

Done properly, it bonds into the slab instead of just sitting on top of it. That’s the difference between a deck that lasts and one that starts flaking at the edges after two summers.

• It’s cooler. A light textured coating reflects the heat that gray concrete soaks up. It’s the difference between walking across your deck and hopping across it.
• It grips. The knockdown texture gives you traction when the deck is wet, which is exactly when you need it.
• It hides what’s there. Rust marks, leaf stains, old patches and hairline cracks all disappear underneath it.
• It beats replacing. Costs far less than tearing out and repouring a slab, and it’s done in a fraction of the time.

Concrete staining

A coating sits on top of the slab. A stain soaks into it. Which one you want depends on what you’re after.

Stain gives you a richer, more natural look with the concrete’s own character still showing through, and it will not chip or peel the way a surface coating can. It’s a good choice for driveways, garage floors, entries and patios where you want color without changing the texture underfoot.

Coating is the better call when you want the surface cooler, less slick, or you need to hide staining and hairline cracks. On a pool deck that’s usually what people want.
